So a buddy of mine called me the other day and asked, “How did you get Bluegrass IronMen started?”  I have to admit, I got a little chuckle out of that.

I first became aware of this “Men’s Breakfast”, around 12 years ago.   A neighbor of mine repeatedly invited me to go with him, to a breakfast at Southland Christian Church, in Nicholasville, KY.  But my work schedule provided all of the excuses that I needed, to avoid getting up at 6:00-6:30 on a Saturday morning, to go to of all places…a church.

I was like a lot of men who feel that church men’s groups, are designed for those who have been raised in the church; the deacons, the elders, the church staff and any member of the church…as long as you are 65 or older!

The long of the short is; I went, I learned and

I became a believer in this ministry.

As I attended, I had the opportunity to watch this group transition from “Breakfast With Breaux”, to “Eggs With Ernie”, to “IronMan” and finally to “Bluegrass IronMen”.
I believe that it was three years ago (in 2009), that we stepped across the walls of the church and into the community, and here’s what we took with us.

  1. No Building
  2. No Furniture
  3. No Equipment
  4. No Staff
  5. No Real Plan
  6. No Church Support
  7. No Money
  8. But One Huge God

And that’s all we needed.

It turns out, I was wrong about this group.  This is not the type of men’s group that I thought it was.  We are a safe environment for men at any stage of life.  We have such a diversity of attenders that includes non-believers, seekers, agnostics, Catholics, Baptists, Lutherans, Presbyterians, Christians, Methodists…you name it, we’ve got it.

So here we are, several years later; independent from any specific church and simply focused on our mission, to follow Proverb 27:17 NIV:

“As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.”

So that’s how it all started.  I hope to see you Saturday morning.

God Bless
